DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: fitting goggles for MTB

Designed from the ground up to meet the specific challenges of freeride and downhill mountain biking.

WHY ARE YOU WEARING MOTO GOGGLES FOR MOUNTAIN BIKING?
It may surprise you that the vast majority of goggles sold for mountain biking were originally designed for moto use. The frame shape, the venting and the lens design all cater to the conditions that are encountered when riding a motorbike and wearing a moto helmet. It’s no surprise to any downhiller that moto conditions present fewer challenges than those encountered when freeriding and downhilling. For goggle makers, freeriding presents a most challenging set of problems, problems that moto goggles aren’t constructed to handle. Because of the likelihood of low airflow due to slower speeds in technical sections, freeride goggles need to address ventilation issues. Combine the lack of airflow with heavy breathing, cool mountain air on the front of the lens and goggle frame vents that are traditionally placed so that they capture vapour from your mouth and nose, and you’re going to have fog problems. In addition to the fog issues, your typical moto goggle isn’t going to fit in a full face mountain bike helmet. Unlike moto helmets, the size of the opening and the curve of the brow in a mountain bike helmet tends to present a tighter fit for goggles, forcing the moto goggles down your face and pushing the front of the helmet up to an unnatural position.

HOW DID WE ADDRESS THESE CHALLENGES?
We started from scratch. We sat down with some seasoned pros including Shaums March — two-time Masters World Champion — and Jay Hoots — bike industry legend, park builder and all-around great guy — and designed a frame that blocks the vapour from your mouth and nose, while channeling fresh air from the front and sides of the goggle to flow up the back of the lens. We added in a double lens to battle fogging that occurs in the cooler mountain air, incorporated tear-off posts for racing, and trimmed down the frame size and shape so it would fit perfectly in the most popular full face MTB helmets. We tested and altered, tested and modified, again and again until we felt we had the best mountain bike goggle on the planet.
