THE IMPORTANCE OF POLARIZED LENSES

Who wants to be temporarily blinded by the sun? Whether you’re riding a bike or driving a car, encountering glare is not only distracting, but often dangerous.

Polarized lenses have become the choice for many. With enhanced visual acuity, contrast and definition, they offer a greatly enhanced and protective visual experience.

HOW DO POLARIZED LENSES WORK?

Essentially, polarized lenses eliminate glare. When light bounces off an uneven surface it tends to scatter at varying angles. However, when it strikes a smooth surface – like a road, water, or a car hood – then it tends to reflect at one angle. And it’s this type of reflection that causes glare.

Polarized lenses are used to combat this and can be manufactured using a variety of methods. At RYDERS, we use an injection method where a polycarbonate material acts as the lens around the polarized component. In effect, polarized glasses act like vertical slits, similar to what you might see in a blind. They only allow light traveling vertically to pass through while blocking light that travels in the horizontal plane – like the light reflected off the road or water.

THE ADVANTAGES OF POLARIZED LENSES

1. REDUCED GLARE AND IMPROVED SAFETY

On sunny days, distant objects often appear hazy, and certain objects often reflect an almost blinding light. Polarized lenses help remove the effects of glare by blocking those reflections. Glare can often mean uncomfortable eye strain for people with sensitive eyes, and can even cause migraines in those more susceptible.

2. SEE NEW DEPTHS

The water enthusiasts among us often swear by polarized lenses. To the unaided eye, the water’s surface reflects everything around it, and the ensuing glare often obscures anything that lurks beneath the water. Polarized lenses block that reflection and enable vivid detail to be seen much deeper into the water, meaning they are often the perfect solution for those who enjoy aquatic adventures.

3. REDUCING EYESTRAIN

Eyestrain is a side effect of glare that can be alleviated by wearing polarized lenses. Squinting in an attempt to see more clearly stresses the eyes and may lead to irritation, fatigue, and headaches. By removing glare, polarized lenses enable the wearer to see the surrounding panorama much more clearly and vividly, thus eliminating any eye strain.

4. AN ENHANCED VISUAL EXPERIENCE

For those who haven’t experienced polarized lenses first hand, landscape photographers often use them in front of their lenses. They do this to enhance contrast and vibrancy. We’ve all seen landscape photos where those deep blue skies contrast so wonderfully with puffy cumulous clouds. The same occurs when wearing polarized lenses. The visual perception of the surroundings is greatly enhanced leading to crisp, clean views that bring the surrounding landscape to life!

HOW POLARIZED LENSES BENEFIT CYCLISTS

Polarized lenses are useful to cyclists for a variety of reasons. Whether on the trails or on the road, cyclists often spend a considerable amount of time outside under the sun.

When cycling, the increased contrast and clarity offered by polarized lenses help you almost instinctively navigate any obstacles on the road ahead with improved reaction times. Being able to quickly identify potholes or debris at full speed is crucial in some cycling disciplines. And it’s on those fast sections where the clarity polarized lenses provide comes into its own.
